The Go Bag Every Family Needs (Before the Unexpected Happens)
Last week, our neighbor lost everything in a house fire caused by someone leaving a candle unattended. It happened so fast. One moment, they were in bed, and the next, the whole block was watching firefighters try to save what was left. They escaped with only their phones and the clothes on their backs.
They’re safe, and that’s what matters most. But I can’t stop thinking, What if that was us? Because a few years ago, it was the US. My family experienced a fire. Thankfully, it was nowhere near as devastating as a total loss, but my children were both under the age of 2, and we did not have any family close by that could come and take care of them while we handled the business of insurance, the Fire Marshal, and the cleaning crew. We were also able to stay in the house while repairs were happening, although that isn’t or wasn’t the most ideal situation, it’s all we had at the time.
But here’s the real truth: in a real emergency, you don’t have time to pack. That’s why every family needs a Go Bag—a 72-hour emergency kit designed to help you survive and stay grounded in those first few days after disaster strikes. I got this phrase from NCIS, and every police show uses the same terminology. So I incorporated it into my system of preparation.
Please don’t take this as a fear-based post. This is love. This is legacy. This is saying, I want to protect you, even when I’m scared too.

This might be the least romantic blog I’ve written, but it might also be the most important because real love isn’t just flowers and forehead kisses. Real love is foresight. Real love is planning. Real love is prepared.
So do this with your family. Involve them. Let them pick their snacks or add a comfort item. Then sleep better knowing that if life throws chaos your way, you’ve already created a pocket of peace.
